CHAPTER 13

CHARLOTTE

The news from New York hadn’t been good when it came in, but it hadn’t been as bad as it could be. It just meant Morgan would have a lot on his plate over the next week. He was nervous about handling everything right, but he was determined to do so. He spent all day yesterday on the phone with Joe, Evan, and Ava, working on the things that Evan and Ava usually took care of.

I thought he’d leave immediately, but he said he wanted to stay with me as long as possible before he left. He’d stayed another day and a half, leaving early this morning. We both had a hard time letting go.

Morgan planned to go to New York and then drive straight through to Birmingham. He said he would make it in time to line up for check-in, but he would be pushing it depending on how long he stayed in New York. I wanted to go with him, but I didn’t want to be presumptuous. So I kept my mouth shut.

Once Morgan was gone, I was going to do the only thing I could think of to help. Something that might just out me to the Holts and also Morgan, but the Hamilton name had been a powerful one when my parents were alive. There was nothing wrong with calling in a favor or two from those in power to make sure things were being handled appropriately.

I picked up my cell and made a call to someone I’d been avoiding since just before I left the city. I was either going to get my ass chewed, or I was going to be smothered in affection. Knowing the person I was calling—probably a combination of the two.

“Commissioner’s office,” the receptionist said as she answered the phone.

“Good morning. This is Charlotte Hamilton, calling for Commissioner Davies,” I replied.

“May I ask what this is in regards to?” The receptionist asked. Her snotty tone triggered memories of a life I no longer wanted.

“Please let the Commissioner know Daniel Hamilton’s daughter, the commissioner’s goddaughter is on the phone. I think that will suffice,” I said with as much detachment and snootiness as I could.

“One moment, miss.”

The phone clicked, and James Davies's voice filled the line. “Charlotte, sweetheart. It’s been ages. Where’ve you been keeping yourself?”

I sighed. I knew that this couldn’t be done without a lot of questions. “I’m in Pittsburgh. Well, at the farm anyway.”

“Suzanne and I were hoping you’d come back to the city after things were settled with your grandparents’ estate. This is your home, you know.”

But it wasn’t, and I didn’t know if I’d be able to convince Uncle James of that. He was a native New Yorker. He didn’t understand that I’d never felt like I belonged there. “There are too many memories, Uncle James. The city and the apartment are constant reminders that I’m alone and that my parents are gone.”

I heard him sigh. “Suzanne and I should have made more of an effort with you, Charlotte, but like you, there are so many memories and reminders.
